Prams will need to be carried up the steps at the hotel entrance. All rooms are non-smoking, but ashtrays can be provided outside for smokers.

At the hotel

Two pools, restaurants, bars, kids’ club, activity centre, spa and wellness centre, PADI dive centre, tennis court, gym, library of books and DVDs, concierge, free WiFi throughout. The hotel's private beach club at Koh Kradan is 20 minutes away by speedboat, and there's a public beach on your doorstep.

In your room

Flatscreen satellite TV, DVD player, iPod dock, minibar, black-out curtains, own-label Anantara toiletries. Junior guests get a sweet daily turndown treat of milk and cookies.

Our favourite rooms

On the ground floor, Deluxe Family Terrace rooms feature a king-size bed, a bunk with rollaway bed for up to three children, and a garden-view terrace with dining table. They also have direct access to the garden. Handy for the main pool, Deluxe Family Rooms, on the second and third floors, are equally well equipped, but have a balcony instead of a terrace. Deluxe Family Sea View Rooms offer a similar set-up, but with views of Pak Meng Beach. If you crave more privacy for older kids or teens, book an Anantara Family Pool Terrace: separate king and twin ground-floor rooms are connected via an outside deck, where you’ll find your own private black-slate pool with fountain and Jacuzzi jets (pool safety fencing can be installed on request). Just the three of you? Baby cots can easily be added to all boudoirs, so skip the family-style rooms with bunk beds in favour of more floor space. Extra beds for older children can be added to all room types, too, and all rooms offer both a bath and shower.

Adjacent to the large adults’ ocean-view pool and Jacuzzi is a shaded children’s pool, where a lifeguard keeps an eye on young splashers from 7am until 7pm. Both are outdoors and unheated, and there’s a Pool Bar for drinks and snacks. Inflatable rings and floats are provided for less-confident swimmers, and swimming lessons cost THB500 a person an hour. The hotel asks that parents do not leave children unsupervised in the pool or alone in their room (especially those with pool access) for safety reasons. Staff at the Diversion Centre will look after guests at the main pool.

The Anantara Spa and Wellness 360° is home to eight treatment rooms (including four couples’ suites). If you can wangle 150 child-free minutes, plump for the Anantara Romantic Journey, a top-to-toe session for two including a floral foot ritual and scrub, aromatic oil massage and pampering facial. Afterwards, chill out in the relaxation sanctuary, a tranquil courtyard with lotus pond. For your A-listers in the making, the Anantara Spa has a special deal where children under 12 can have half-price treatments every day before 2pm.

Bring a fold-up changing mat, as there are no dedicated baby-changing facilities, and it'll come in handy on the beaches.

Book ahead

Organise your downtime in advance by lining up spa treatment slots when you reserve your room. You can book the kids’ club in advance, but it’s usually fine to just turn up on the day; babysitters can usually be arranged with a day's notice.

The hotel recycles and composts, sources food locally, and supports mangrove replanting.

Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa – Krabi – Thailand

Casual, open-air restaurant Leelawadee is the place to perch for buffet breakfasts, light pasta lunches and Southern Thai tastes at night, including roast pork and massaman curry. Si Kao’s flashy fine-diner Acqua serves trad Italian fare and fresh-caught seafood in a sleek white dining room or out on the breezy balcony. For smoothies, cakes and coffee, seek out the Beach House bar. Crowd-pleasing classics such as steak sandwiches and Caesar salads can be found at the hotel’s private beach club, Koh Kradan, a 20-minute speedboat ride away on a pretty island.

Family fare

Children are welcome in all the restaurants and bars at any time, and highchairs and tempting Dugong Club kids’ menus are available. There are crowd-pleasing staples such as pizza at the Beach House; fried rice, spaghetti bolognaise and apple crumble at Leelawadee; and burgers at Koh Kradan beach club. Youngsters will also enjoy Dining by Design, where a personal chef will serve a family dinner on the beach, in the forest or on your balcony.

Hotel Bar

With its airy, white-washed decor, scatter cushions and beanbags, the Beach House exudes an easy-going vibe. There is also a Pool Bar, which serves drinks, pizzas, ice-cream and snacks during the day, and a beach club café at Koh Kradan. Your children can join you for a bite to eat, while you sip a cheeky Thaiprinhia, a Siamese take on the cool Brazilian cocktail.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Leelawadee from 6.30am to 11am; Thai-inspired lunch and dinner from 12 noon to 11pm. Acqua whips up Italian fine-dining from 6pm to 10.30pm. The Beach House is open from 9am to 11pm, the Pool Bar from 10am to 6.30pm, and Koh Kradan beach club from 9am to 2pm during peak season only (usually early November to mid-April).

Smith Insider

  • Top table

Book a table on the terrace at Leelawadee so the smalls can run around on the lawn while you eat. For a romantic meal for two, make a beeline for the river-view tables in Acqua’s white-hot dining room, or book a Dining By Design personal-chef session.

  • Room service

Available 24 hours, with a choice of the full restaurant menus during opening hours, and a range of refreshing drinks.

Compact strollers for babies are allowed in the restaurants, but not huge prams, and highchairs are provided. Staff members are happy to heat up baby food or milk on request, and can adapt dishes to suit junior tastes.

Things to do

Aquatic action beckons with two swimming pools and Changlang and Pak Meng beaches to choose from nearby. Water babes will love the dugong encounters, snorkelling and scuba diving on offer through the Sea Bees Diving Centre, or there’s sailing, kayaking and trekking further afield. A cool cultural hit comes courtesy of Thai cookery classes and language lessons. Tennis and cycling tours have your sporty bases covered. Anantara’s spa and kids’ club offer indulgence for both ends of the family spectrum.

Hotel activities

Anantara is set on Changlang Beach, but you’re also five minutes’ stroll from nearby Pak Meng Beach for more golden shores. Ask staff to pack you a picnic to savour on bone-white sands backed by limestone cliffs. Alternatively, sail to nearby Libong Island, where you can snorkel and kayak in the Andaman Sea, and possibly spy a dugong. The hotel also has a PADI dive facility with access to 10 dive sites – even non-divers can join in on an ocean experience led by the experienced staff. Around Koh Kradan isle, you can snorkel amid vibrant red corals, find Nemo and watch relaxed reef sharks. The Bubblemaker programme, for children over eight, lets them experience what it's like to go scuba diving in the safety of the swimming pool. Boat trips to Koh Mook and its lagoon-lapped Emerald Cave are another must-do, and suit swimmers and snorkellers. For something more sedate, Thai cooking and language classes can be arranged at the resort.

And there's more…

Make the most of the sparkling, azure-hued Andaman Sea by chartering Anantara’s Sunseeker Manhattan 60-foot luxury yacht, The Minor Affair, to take you out and about. You can commandeer it to whisk you from Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket to Anantara Si Kao, which takes three-and-a-half hours non-stop. To soak up the spectacular seascape (and because you have to charter the yacht for the whole day), we recommend you adopt a slower pace and stop off for snorkelling on the way. The price starts at THB205,000 (excluding taxes) for a full-day charter including lunch – so you might want to find a few friends to share it with. The yacht has room for eight guests.

Smith tip

For tasty curries, fried fish, spicy salads, sushi, noodles and Thai desserts, including delicious waffles, sweets and donuts, be sure to check out Trang’s popular weekend night market near the station, considered the best one on the Andaman Coast.

Don't miss…

August's annual Trang Cake Festival, sure to be a winner with sweet-tooths. It’s usually held near the railway station, with coffee, orange, tropical fruit and ‘three taste’ cakes up for grabs.

Anantara Si Kao is a great place for active types, as it offers a slew of things to do for all ages. Its secluded seaside location in Si Kao, 90 minutes’ drive from Krabi, makes for a blissful beach getaway – although be aware that the quiet pace of life here may not appeal to those looking for buzzy bars. School-age children will especially love the watersports and elephant treks.

Situated 50 kilometres from Si Kao, and spanning 230 square kilometres, Had Chao Mai National Park is home to mangroves and rugged limestone karsts, with walking trails and picnic spots. Dugongs are often spotted lolling in the sea grass, just offshore. The smalls will love swimming in the calm, shallow sea. At low tide, you can walk through the bay to Ao Por Beach.

For more coastal chilling, board the speedboat bound for the hotel's private beach club at Koh Kradan, a coral-fringed island covered in lush monsoon forest. Snorkel and kayak in the glass-clear Andaman Sea, before nabbing a sunlounger. Junior palates will enjoy the burgers and sandwiches served at the Koh Kradan beach club.

Green-seekers can tee off at Sri Trang Golf Course (+66 (0)75 203 319), a 35-minute drive from the hotel at 15 Lam Phu Road, Huay Yod, Trang, where 18 holes are fringed with palm trees and rubber plants. Teens may fancy accompanying you for a round, but perhaps book a babysitter back at the resort to take care of younger family members while you play.

Looking for inspiration for family-friendly dining within reach of the hotel? A relaxed restaurant on Pak Meng Beach in Si Kao, Yokyor (+66 (0)75 274 014) specialises in fresh seafood, with light and bright dishes such as barbecued squid, steamed crabs and tom yum soup. Staff can pick you up from the resort, then drop you back after you’ve finished your meal. Kids will enjoy the laid-back beachside setting, and can let off steam on the sand between courses. You’ll love the views of karst peaks and ocean.

For a dim sum fix, make the 45-minute trip to Trang, a multi-cultural town with Chinese, Malay and Indian heritage. Top pick for dumplings and Chinese buns is Ton Noon Dim Sum, at 202 Pad Sathani Road. If you’re touring Trang by car, bike or foot, it makes a handy pit-stop for peckish children and the pick-and-mix selection of small bites should appeal to junior appetites.

Trang is famous for its kopi shops, such as Ko Teng (+66 (0)75 218 148) café at 77–79 Prahram 6 Road, where strong filtered coffee is served sweetened with condensed milk. Be sure to use the Hokkien word kopi, rather than the Thai term kaffae, otherwise you’ll end up with Nescafé. Teens will like the youthful scene at this relaxed spot, which is out the front of a backpacker hotel. Light meals of chicken curry, noodles, rice and egg on toast will get younger kids’ votes.

Caffeine fiends should also seek out fan-cooled Sin-O-Cha Bakery (+66 (0)75 211 191), near the Trang train station on the same road, for a cup of kopi, cake and Western-style breakfasts. If you’re arriving in or departing from Krabi by train, this is a handy spot to refuel with the family.

For heartier, inexpensive fare in Trang, German-owned bar/restaurant Wunderbar (+66 (0)876 248 728) dishes up Thai and European food, so you can take your pick of papaya salads, steaks and pizza. The cosy, informal space will make Junior Smiths feel at home, and the style of cuisine is family-friendly. Find it at 24 Sathani Road, Tambon Tab Tiang.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa – has been selected and approved by parents.

Oh, we do love to be beside the seaside – and at the remote and laid-back Anantara Si Kao Resort & Spa, aquatic action is at the heart of the family-friendly fun. A pair of pools, safe swimming beaches and a pristine private island reached by speedboat mean that splashers are seriously spoilt for choice. Best of all, the daily free kids' club, 90-minute hop to Krabi and reasonable rates mean a family holiday here is neither a bank-breaker nor a back-breaker.

On dry land, children will fall for the crafty activities in the Dugong Club, bicycle tours through Trang village and elephant treks further afield. Parents, meanwhile, will applaud the welcoming restaurants, family-tailored accommodation in spacious rooms, sleek beach bar and pampering day spa, striking an ideal balance between ‘me time’ and ‘we time’.
