Our favourite rooms

If you want to spread yourselves elegantly across two big bedrooms, book a Club House Suite, which span 80sq m and boast a hillside-surveying terrace. You can feel fairly independent while you’re here, thanks to the hob-equipped kitchenette, and there’s a little living room with a sofa and TV. Decor is Tuscan rustic: wooden furniture, countryside hues.

There’s a large outdoor pool surrounded by gorgeous countryside, designed with families in mind and open from May to September. The pool has a shallow end, but there's no lifeguard so keep a watchful eye on little Smiths; there’s also a little garden with sun loungers and parasols. Families can also use the pool at L'Andana.

The sleek spa at L’Andana has a range of tempting Espa beauty treatments, a, black-slate hot bath, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool and a Jacuzzi overlooking the gardens.

Breakfast is served in Casa Bardiola, guests staying here can also hop across to L'Andana's two eateries: La Villa and La Trattoria. Casual, kitchen-style dining room La Villa is open for lunch (and dinner if Trattoria Toscana is closed). Enrico Bartolini-helmed La Trattoria is set in the old granary and open to non-guests too. Modern Mediterranean trattoria dishes are whipped up using fresh, local produce, including aromatic herbs, vegetables, wine and olive oil from the gardens and cellar of Tenuta La Badiola. It’s open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday from June to September; during the summer Monday’s dinner option is a fixed-price (€80) barbecue in the gardens.

Family fare

Highchairs are available, and the chef will happily adapt dishes for children’s tastes.

Things to do

The hotel has a brilliant kids club, a family-friendly outdoor pool, pretty green grounds and some sociable sitting areas where you can read or play board games. At next-door sister hotel L’Andana, you'll find the spa, golf course, pool and a brace of restaurants: one casual; one formal.

Sunny days

Play tennis on L’Andana’s courts, or have a golf lesson on the hotel’s pretty course. Borrow bikes and wheel around the countryside, or request a picnic in the grounds.

Rainy days

While kids hide out in the club, parents can seek refuge in the spa: try the signature treatment with olive oil and lavender from the hotel’s gardens. You’ll be exfoliated and massaged, and the treatment ends with a dessert. Bliss…

And there's more…

One of the nicest ways to while away a morning or afternoon is on one of the cooking classes hosted by L'Andana's eminent brigade. Go alone to brush up on Tuscan classics, learn to cook as a family team, or treat your under-12s to a fun Kids in the Kitchen class – themes include Crazy Pizza and I Love Chocolate. With each two-hour class, you get your own chef's toque, apron and notebook, plus a (self-cooked!) meal: adults, €180; children, €90.

Local Guide

Casa Badiola – Tuscany – Italy

This patch of Tuscany is a great place for children, because it’s safe, gorgeous and unpolluted. Maremma, Italy’s Wild West, is characterised by beautiful coastline, hot springs and marshes once patrolled by cowboys. Kids will especially love visiting the beaches on the Tuscan coast, no more than 15 minutes away by car. Start with a trip to charming Castiglione della Pescaia, a colourful, characterful little seaside town that's just a 15-minute drive away.

Go on a hunt for your own private stretch of coastline at Maremma Nature Park (; +39 0564 393), a ruggedly beautiful spot. Be warned: there are craggy cliff sections, too, so be sure to explore together, rather than letting little ones venture ahead.

Elba, a beautiful little hideaway just off the Maremma coast, is the largest and most central of the islands within the Tuscan archipelago. It’s famous for its turquoise waters and vividly coloured scenery.
Smith & Family. Bring snorkelling gear for little Smiths, who can embark on aquatic adventures here.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Casa Badiola – has been selected and approved by parents.

Family holidays are fabulous at Casa Badiola hotel in gorgeous Tuscany. The hotel is set in a green and verdant patch of Italy, with beaches close by and plenty of peace and quiet: just what the doctor ordered for city-frazzled parents. The hotel doesn’t scream style or pretension; it’s elegant, airy and very practical. Rooms have hobs so you can whip up your own take on Tuscan cuisine, there’s an excellent kids club and a sweet little pool designed with young ’uns in mind. Even better, older  Smiths can enjoy access to Smith-favourite, L’Andana hotel: home to an Alain Ducasse restaurant, a relaxing spa and buzzy little bar areas. Everyone’s happy. But if someone does start to growl or get bored or throw their metaphorical toys from the metaphorical pram, Siena and Florence are within easy reach: you just might never get there, thanks to all that’s there to distract you on your Maremma doorstep.
