Our favourite rooms
What child could resist the adventure of staying in a treehouse? Treehouse Loft Suites have hidden bunk areas for up to four children, as well as a dining and sitting area; you’ll love the contemporary fittings – locally sourced cedar and Purbeck stone, floor-to-ceiling windows, plenty of tech and a hot tub on your private covered deck – all 30 foot off the ground and framed by the forest canopy. Back at the hotel, all rooms and suites are individually styled, smart and spacious. Most have a balcony, terrace or garden; extra beds and cots can be added to any room from Silver up. Best choices for families are interconnecting rooms, or two-floor Duplex Suites – the downstairs sitting room will accommodate extra beds, leaving parents undisturbed in the upstairs double, plus most have an extra bathroom. Duplex Suites also feature period furnishings and privacy aplenty, thanks to an upstairs balcony and a walled garden out the back.
The sunlounger-flanked heated outdoor family pool is open from April until September; there are Roman steps, but there is a deep end, so take care with toddlers. The main indoor pool is heated, ozone treated and 17 metres long – set in an attractive Roman-themed space with columns and trompe l'oeil on the walls, it's open all year. But, as it is housed in the spa, adult-accompanied mini Smiths are restricted to two daily sessions: 9am–10am, and 4pm–5.30pm. Swim nappies are available to buy.
Chewton is the proud home an award-winning, superlative-garnering spa, with Europe's biggest hydrotherapy spa pool, aromatherapy saunas and crystal steam rooms; there’s even an outdoor whirlpool. The treatment menu is indulgent and exhaustive, and even includes a few mini beauty treatments for children. The well-equipped gym has all the TechnoGym kit you'd expect, plus Power Plates; and there's a programme of free fitness classes, including pilates, yoga and AquaFit.
If you fancy having a whole forest-canopy pad to yourselves or hosting an extended family stay, you can book an entire two-suite treehouse (sleeping up to nine guests). There's a mini menu of bespoke treehouse spa treatments you can enjoy in your suite.
If you have specific spa treatments in mind, book these ahead of arrival. Vetiver restaurant is popular with locals as well as guests, so it's worth booking weekend dinners and Sunday lunch ahead. Call in advance if you intend to arrive via helicopter.
Pets are not allowed, but the hotel is happy to sort out board at reputable kennels nearby.
