Our favourite rooms

What child could resist the adventure of staying in a treehouse? Treehouse Loft Suites have hidden bunk areas for up to four children, as well as a dining and sitting area; you’ll love the contemporary fittings – locally sourced cedar and Purbeck stone, floor-to-ceiling windows, plenty of tech and a hot tub on your private covered deck – all 30 foot off the ground and framed by the forest canopy. Back at the hotel, all rooms and suites are individually styled, smart and spacious. Most have a balcony, terrace or garden; extra beds and cots can be added to any room from Silver up. Best choices for families are interconnecting rooms, or two-floor Duplex Suites – the downstairs sitting room will accommodate extra beds, leaving parents undisturbed in the upstairs double, plus most have an extra bathroom. Duplex Suites also feature period furnishings and privacy aplenty, thanks to an upstairs balcony and a walled garden out the back.

Poolside

The sunlounger-flanked heated outdoor family pool is open from April until September; there are Roman steps, but there is a deep end, so take care with toddlers. The main indoor pool is heated, ozone treated and 17 metres long – set in an attractive Roman-themed space with columns and trompe l'oeil on the walls, it's open all year. But, as it is housed in the spa, adult-accompanied mini Smiths are restricted to two daily sessions: 9am–10am, and 4pm–5.30pm. Swim nappies are available to buy.

Spa

Chewton is the proud home an award-winning, superlative-garnering spa, with Europe's biggest hydrotherapy spa pool, aromatherapy saunas and crystal steam rooms; there’s even an outdoor whirlpool. The treatment menu is indulgent and exhaustive, and even includes a few mini beauty treatments for children. The well-equipped gym has all the TechnoGym kit you'd expect, plus Power Plates; and there's a programme of free fitness classes, including pilates, yoga and AquaFit.

And…

If you fancy having a whole forest-canopy pad to yourselves or hosting an extended family stay, you can book an entire two-suite treehouse (sleeping up to nine guests). There's a mini menu of bespoke treehouse spa treatments you can enjoy in your suite.

Book ahead

If you have specific spa treatments in mind, book these ahead of arrival. Vetiver restaurant is popular with locals as well as guests, so it's worth booking weekend dinners and Sunday lunch ahead. Call in advance if you intend to arrive via helicopter.

Pet-friendly

Pets are not allowed, but the hotel is happy to sort out board at reputable kennels nearby.

Dining

Chewton’s fabulous five-roomed gastrodome (aka the Dining Room) has a cosmopolitan menu serving guests whatever, whenever. Whether you fancy a casual brunch or five-course, wine-matched tasting menu, dishes are all seasonally themed and skilfully produced by chef Luke Matthews and his brigade. In the Bar and Lounge, there's a menu of light dishes and snacks. At the spa's Pool Bar, browse the healthily stocked buffet – first thing, for breakfast; then at lunchtime for seafood, salads and more, or you can order paninis or sandwiches.

Family fare

Children are welcome to eat anywhere, although after 8pm, dining en famille at Vetiver is for over-5s only. Special children's menus feature family favourites from eggy bread or beans on toast to free-range chicken breast. Between 6pm and 8pm (last orders 7pm), there's also a family-friendly buffet-style supper as well as the usual à la carte menu (both are free for under-5s). The Lounge (a far easier option with very little ones) welcomes family feasting, morning, noon and night, and is a good snack-break option. Highchairs are available, and baby food is also available to buy.

Hotel Bar

A burgundy-walled, leather-armchaired den, the Bar at Chewton Glen is ideal for aperitifs or digestifs. Take your cue from the grown-up decor and entertain little ones in the Lounge instead.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Vetiver 7.30–10.30am; lunch 12–2pm, and dinner 6pm–10pm. The Lounge menu is served all day. And the Bar offers drink and good cheer until there’s nobody left to enjoy them.

Smith Insider

  • Top table

In summer, treat your mini-Smiths to proper afternoon tea on the Lounge terrace; choose a parrot-green horseshoe booth for a treaty family Sunday lunch in Vetiver (wriggly bottoms will be better contained); the Oak End in Vetiver.

  • Room service

Light meals, drinks or snacks – both hot or cold – can be brought to your room 24 hours a day.

    Also

Picnic hampers can be ordered ahead to take anywhere on the grounds, or on a jaunt to the nearby beach. If you're staying in one of the treehouse suites, a breakfast hamper will be delivered to your door each morning.

Things to do

Chewton Glen hotel is so much more than a country house. Its 130 acres of parkland are home to walking, cycling and jogging trails, tennis courts, a kids' treehouse play area, an outdoor swimming pool – even a nine-hole golf course. Rural pursuits such as falconry, archery and clay-pigeon shooting can be arranged on site. And there’s no shortage of indoor entertainment, either, including in Chewton’s impressive thalassotherapy spa.

Hotel activities

Genteel pursuits are the order of the day: put the tennis courts, nine-hole golf course and croquet lawn to good use (mini mallets and balls are provided for younger guests); for more active entertainment, explore the grounds and beyond on foot or on mountain bikes (bikes, toddler trailers and helmets are available to borrow free).

Sunny days

Order a picnic hamper, pick up a kite and borrow some wellies for a family trip to the beach, a 15-minute walk from Chewton Glen. Target your energies into a bout of archery or clay-pigeon shooting, or try off-roading in Apache Buggies; you can even try your hand at falconry or duck-herding (all on site, but at an extra cost – you'll need arrange these a day ahead).

Rainy days

Indoor tennis courts (and coaches), an indoor pool, a film library and WiFi mean your entertainment options can be as energetic or lazy as you like. As well as the welcome activity pack given to all little Smiths, there’s a cupboardful of board games, a children’s DVD library, and games consoles.

And there's more…

For the youngest guests, there is a treehouse play area with telescopes, viewing platforms and a slide to explore.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Chewton Glen – has been selected and approved by parents.

The sweeping drive leads up to a stately shuttered manor house; there are croquet lawns, tennis courts – even a nine-hole golf course… at first glance, this Hampshire spa hotel is a study in English gentility. But don't let this luxurious country-club veneer fool you into thinking 'boring adults only'. Amble through the woods fringing Chewton Glen's green, green grounds, and you'll find treehouses with bunk beds and viewing platforms, youngsters wobbling about on mountain bikes, and an outdoor pool. You might even catch sight of a duck-herding class or treasure hunt in progress. Beyond, there's a pebbled beach for picnics and kite-flying, and the gorse-studded plains of the New Forest to roam on foot, bike or horseback. With a free kids club operating in the school holidays, you are free to enjoy grown-up pleasures in the hotel's state-of-the-art spa and award-winning restaurant before retiring to peaceful, perfectly appointed family rooms. Chewton Glen is a truly special family stay.

Smith & Family

‘Mummy – the hot tub's got disco lights in it! Can we go in when it's dark, please? Please can we?’ I tell them that they can go in it whenever they like, and that they can then watch a DVD, and then in the morning they can play in the forest and make camps, and then go to kids' club and make papier-mâché creatures – which they can take home. They are aghast.

‘Then Daddy will take you for a swim in the indoor pool while Mummy has a massage and her nails done, then that lovely lady who served you “the best burger ever” at lunchtime is going to come and read you a bedtime story and put you to bed while Mummy and Daddy go and eat in the fabulous restaurant next door. And you can watch TV in your bedroom in the morning when you wake up and play on the PlayStation provided you don’t come in and wake us up. You’ll find your breakfast in the hatch behind the sliding door.’ By the time I say, ‘Just help yourselves – there are pains aux raisins, you know' their mouths are still ajar.

The food and spa were great. We had two luxury facials which were very nice and very informative. Nearby, Koh Nia Thai restaurant in Christchurch was lovely.

Don’t expect

The price of food and drink. The spa hydrotherapy pool area seemed a little dated but clean and relaxing. The Roman pictures on the wall just not our taste!!

The food was absolutely superb at every meal from breakfast to dinner. Every dish we had tasted super fresh, just inventive enough and was fabulously satisfying. The staff was wonderfully welcoming, extremely professional and seemed all delighted to work at Chewton Glen.

The quintessential country house feel of the place from the sweeping creaky staircase to the manicured croquet lawn. Find the gardeners patch, his sweetpeas are gorgeous.

… to do anything for yourself, the staff to guest ratio is insane. I had a reaction to the water in the pool, nothing wrong with the water I'm just hopelessly sensitive to chemicals, the spa staff were very solicitous offering calming creams an ice pack.
