Our favourite rooms

Each apartment is unique, but all are lovely. Apartment Principal is the best option for big families – it can sleep up to six, with two on fold-out beds. The stylish Paso Doble suite could be the perfect hideaway for families with a teen or two in too; it has two huge bedrooms, each with its own private Juliet balcony, and a generous living space with a floor-to-ceiling bay window giving great views of the Barcelona backstreets. If you’re a larger group, perhaps two families travelling together, some apartments interconnect to create three-bedroom, three-bathroom super stays (the largest combination is Ghost and Finn).

Food and drink

Although there is no restaurant at DestinationBCN, there is a fantastic food market, La Boqueria, just a 10-minutes walk away, and enough speciality delicatessens in the area to encourage use of the fully fitted kitchen. You can also arrange for a chef to come and cater for you.

Family fare

You can cook your mini diners anything they fancy in your apartment’s kitchen, from universal Catalan favourite patatas bravas or something more adventurous to take advantage of your day’s shopping expedition. Highchairs are available on request.

Hotel Bar

There’s no bar in the building, but you’re never far from a tavern in this town. Feel free to fill the fridge with some Mestre Mas Via cava from the local market, too.

Last orders

The glory of self-catering is that you can eat whenever you like, from early-evening tea for the mini Smiths to late-night supper for Mr and Mrs.

Things to do

This isn’t the sort of place that has a kids club or a menu of family activities – rather, it’s your home from home bang in the middle of the Catalan capital. Head out and explore family-friendly Barcelona.

Hotel activities

If it’s a rare rainy day (or you just feel like lounging about and enjoying your exquisitely decorated apartment) you’ll find a selection of books and DVDs at your disposal, including U-rated films.

Sunny days

The hotel's concierge has a full arsenal of family-friendly activities to help make the most of your stay. A picnic in Park Güell, gastronomy tours sampling Barcelona's sweetest treats and even kayaking can all be arranged. Each tour can be tailored to your family's interests, so let the kids take the reins for a day.

Smith tip

Book a babysitter for Gimlet on Calle Santaló, one of the buzziest bars in Barcelona and is known for its Manhattan-rivalling cocktails. Its art deco design has a modern twist but is an old-timey nod to the speakeasies of yesteryear.

Don't miss…

To get a taste of the city’s sensational seafood, head to Botafumeiro on Carrer Gran de Gràcia. In the wee hours of each morning, the dedicated team is haggling at the seafood markets of Catalonia to make sure they bring back the freshest fish.

You’ll find tons of tips for where to eat on a handy print-out in your flat – one of the perks of staying with DestinationBCN is that despite being cosily coccooned in your own independent apartment, you’ve got a team of expert locals constantly keeping an ear out for the hottest spots in town. They also work with their favourite partners in town to organise tailored experiences for families; they’ll be happy to help you sort everything from child-sized bike rentals – tour operators Cruising Barcelona (+34 93 518 75 33, have front and rear child seats, and even flowery bike baskets to hire – and perfect picnics to top tennis courts and the best beaches.

Frilly anenomes, eels shot through with neon and squirmy octopi will delight little ones at L'Aquarium de Barcelona (+34 93 221 74 74,, and they'll find furred and feathered critters at Barcelona Zoo (+34 90 245 75 45) – a 25-minute walk from the hotel. Gaudi's fairy-tale buildings will captivate with their otherworldly sculptures and colourful façades; Casa Batlló is a 12-minute walk away and Sagrada Familia is a 30-minute walk away.

Getting There

Set in the centre of Barcelona, seconds from Eixample, DestinationBCN is perfectly positioned for exploring all the city has to offer.

The closest airport is Barcelona El Prat (, at just 11km from the city. Being the second biggest airport in Spain it is served by most major airlines such as easyJet (, British Airways ( and KLM ( from across the UK and mainland Europe. There are also three flights arriving daily from New York. You can hop in a cab outside arrivals for around €20. Buses to the city centre run every 15 minutes; a ticket costs about €3.

The 18-minute train journey from airport to Passeig de Gracia (10 minutes walk to the hotel) costs around €3; trains run every half an hour. Spain also has a reasonably priced national network but book ahead as trains get busy (

Navigating Barcelona’s one-way system can be tricky, as can parking, but follow signs to Plaça de Catalunya, the city’s main square. The suites are located just off the square on Ronda Universitat. You can hail cabs from anywhere on the street, or ask the DestinationBCN concierge to order a car for you.

Parent travel tip

If you want to minimise travelling time, make sure you’re flying to Barcelona–El Prat (BCN) and not the further away Girona–Costa Brava Airport (GRO), where some low-cost airlines land, which is at least an hour’s drive away.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Smith & Family

As super-stylish city breaks with kids go, you can’t really beat Barcelona – the sun is almost always shining on the beautiful, plentiful beaches; getting around on foot and by Metro couldn’t be easier; and who needs a kids’ menu when tapas is bite-sized already?

And, if you’re an independent family seeking a sleek and self-contained HQ from which to explore the city, DestinationBCN is just the place. Anne and Miklós, the design duo behind these luxury-packed but family-friendly apartments in the heart of Barcelona, have spent the last few years creating the sort of city-centre hideaways you want to move into forever and never leave. Each is unique but all are elegant, comfortable and filled with delightful things; each has a fully equipped kitchen almost guaranteed to be as nice as – if not better than – the one you cook in back at home (and with Barcelona’ world-famous La Boqueria nearby, you won’t be lacking ingredients).

Stayed on

We loved

The location, the design, the terrace, great facilities (proper hairdryer, iron etc). Nine out of 10.

Don’t expect

There's no room service or daily cleaning or turn-down service. The fact that you can't properly sit down and eat a meal in the Naoko apartment was annoying to me - the stools at the breakfast bar were too high to actually be able to sit at the table.

We loved

The design, the location, and the spacious layout. Locally, Quimet i Quimet does the best tapas in town at incredibly good prices. Arrive as soon as it opens, and enjoy your meal with a glass of aged vermouth.

Don’t expect

Any kind of food or room service.
