Need To Know

Rooms

17 apartments, including two studios.

Check–out

12 noon (flexible, subject to a charge). Earliest check-in, 3pm.

Rates

Double rooms from £137.35 (€164), including tax at 10 per cent. Please note the hotel charges an additional local city tax of €2.50 per person per night on check-out.

More details

Rates are per apartment and include free WiFi and tea and coffee. Continental breakfast is extra (€15 for adults; €7 for under-12s).

Also

Thanks to the lift, you won’t have to lug luggage up stairs. There’s also a third-floor apartment with disabled access.

At the hotel

This is a block of serviced apartments: beyond the concierge at reception and what’s in your apartment, the only shared facilities are: laptops, a PlayStation, games and iPads.

In your room

Living room: sofa beds (except the studios). Bedroom: flatsceen TV with iPad connector, radio, iPod dock, slippers, preloaded iPod (on request), selection of films saved on a USB stick, free WiFi throughout. Bathroom: bathrobes and Charm & More bath products by Jeanne Piaubert. Kitchenette: Nespresso machines, hob, microwave, pots, pans, kettle, Alessi crockery, minibar.

Our favourite rooms

The apartments are similar in style (white and minimal) and layout: all have one double bedroom and a separate living room with a kitchenette (apart from the Luxe apartment, which has two bedrooms). If you want a Juliet balcony, book an apartment on the fifth floor; those on the second and third floors have soaring ceilings. The higher your apartment, the less street noise you'll hear.

Book ahead

Babysitting costs €30 an hour and needs to be arranged with the concierge at least two days in advance.

Pet-friendly

Does your dog want to come to Paris and does it weigh less than 20 kilos? If so, it’s welcome too for €20 a night (let the hotel know in advance). Dog bowls are provided.

Dining

Instead of having a hotel restaurant, each apartment has its own kitchenette, so you can rustle up whatever you fancy, whenever you fancy. If you’re not in the mood to cook, staff won’t let you go hungry – they can arrange for 15 different types of cuisine to be delivered to your door (perhaps not all at once). The apartment minibars are stocked with snacks including cookies, crisps and ice-cream. If you’d rather have some healthier options, just let the concierge know in advance – any extras will be added to your bill.

Family fare

Breakfast for little Smiths is €7; options include: pastries, breads, yoghurt, stewed fruit, smoothies, fresh juice and chocolate milk. Alternatively, pick up your own supplies from Chez Jean, the little grocery shop on Rue Faubourg Montmartre, or the Franprix supermarket, just a two-minute walk away. The hotel can provide highchairs for each apartment.

Hotel Bar

No bar or honesty bar area, but there’s beer and champagne in the minibars. Let the ever-helpful staff know if you’re thirsty for a particular vintage or label. Alternatively, take your brood for tea and cakes at Le Valentin café, just down the road at 30–32 passage Jouffroy (+33 (0)1 47 70 88 50; www.le-valentin.fr).

Smith Insider

Things to do

The hotel’s city-central location makes it a great crash pad for exploring Paris and on rainy, lazy days, you can cuddle up in the living room and watch one of the U- or PG-rated DVDs on the flatscreen TV, borrow one of the laptops or iPads or give the PlayStation a go (games include Fifa 12 and Sims 3).

Hotel activities

The concierge can arrange a private chef, personal trainer, beauty treatments, taxis, dry cleaning and other extras. You’ll want to get out and about, of course, and Paris is great for kids: little ones under three can travel for free on buses, trains and the Métro, and many museums offer reduced rates for juniors. Take your brood to the Centre Pompidou and its Galerie des Enfants, which has interactive exhibitions created by artists and designers; the Espace 13/16 caters to teenagers (www.centrepompidou.fr). Take the escalator to enjoy the view and do a quick whizz around the museum looking for works by Picasso, Matisse and the surrealists.

Smith tip

The inside-out architecture and colourful exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou make it diverting enough for small people: there's even a dedicated Galerie des Enfants with interactive displays (www.centrepompidou.fr).

Don't miss…

Entertain 'Ratatouille'-obsessed littl'uns with a trip to the Eiffel Tower, a hop across some of the Seine's bridges, a peek in the sewers courtesy of the Musée des Egouts (Pont de l'Alma; +33 1 53 68 27 81) and a meal at Ratatouille in Montmartre.

From this central location, Paris is your playground. Some of the city’s best activities for families are close by: the area’s largest park can be found at Square de Montholon (2 rue Mayran, 75009), a 10-minute walk from the hotel. It has ping-pong tables and a playground that’s open every day (8am–9.30pm).

The Jardin des Tuileries is 15 minutes away by Métro (Line 7; direct journey); the Jardin du Luxembourg is a 25-minute bus ride and has horse-riding, a playground and a vintage carousel. If you’re in Paris with older ones, Le Louvre and Montmartre are a 20-minute stroll away.

Getting There

Résidence Nell is located on the arty 9ème arrondissement, close to cultural, architectural and historical hotspots, including Opéra Garnier, Galeries Lafayette’s flagship store, the Olympia (Paris’ oldest music hall) and the Fragonard perfume museum.

Planes

Paris Orly (www.aeroportsdeparis.fr) is 18km away (a 25-minute drive). Air France’s shuttle service to the city centre by bus runs every 20 minutes. Taxis to the city centre cost around €50. Alternatively, Charles de Gaulle airport is 23km (a 35-minute drive). The hotel doesn’t offer transfers but airport taxis are easy to come by (expect to pay around €50–€70).

Trains

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Gare du Nord, 1km away. The Eurostar connects Paris to London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lille and other popular European cities (www.eurostar.com). There’s a taxi rank outside the station, so you won’t be waiting long for a lift. If you’re taking the Métro, Cadet station (on Line 7) and Grands Boulevards (Line 8 and 9) are both just a short walk away (www.parismetro.com).

Automobiles

Driving in Paris is a hair-raising, time-hogging experience; you’re better off using public transport or gadding around on foot. However, if you’re pausing in Paris mid-road-trip or wheels are a non-negotiable, park your car at the public car park two minutes from the hotel. Staff can also book chauffeur-driven cars or motorbike taxis.

Parent travel tip

If you’re likely to use the Métro during your stay, invest in a pass for unlimited use (prices vary, depending on the length of your stay: a day-day adult pass is around €9; the junior equivalent (4-11 years) starts from around €6. Under-4s can use public transport for free.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Nell Hotel & Suites – has been selected and approved by parents.

Paris for parents can be daunting: hotel rooms are renowned for being on the petite side, service can teeter on the haughty side and prices can appear on the steep side. What families need in this city is a stylish boutique base-camp with expert concierge and independent apartment-style living, preferably with a kitchenette or two, so that not every night has to be a bistro night. Here’s introducing Nell Hotel & Suites, a Patrick Jouin-style hideaway in the cultured 9eme arondissement.

Paris wouldn’t be Paris without Patrick Jouin – design experts reckon you can’t walk 350 metres of the city without encountering the works. Nell Hotel & Suites is très Jouin: contemporary, function-led and elegant. The apartments aren’t crammed with furniture, but what’s there is high spec: Alessi, Kartell, and Ligne Roset pieces, some designed by Jouin himself. Apart from a few madcap touches, the aesthetic is one of white simplicity. The philosophy is similarly fuss-free; don’t expect a flotilla of staff, just a dedicated concierge on hand to book restaurants and shape your holiday how you like. Families won’t feel fussed over here, but they will have their own sleek apartment-style stay, at the heart of this busy, dynamic city. Days spent exploring can segue smoothly into relaxed nights in, with DVDs, iPads and PlayStations for tech-hungry Smith Juniors.

We loved

The location, the staff, the space in the apartment; being able to come back late afternoon and relax was great. Super cafes, creperie and shops nearby.

Don’t expect

It is not cheap, but I think it is worth the expense as it really enhanced our holiday.

We loved

The location was perfect for accessing all the Paris tourist spots quickly and easily. There were lots of good places to eat nearby, and the hotel staff were all extremey helpful, especially Remy, who was there when we arrived. The interconnecting apartments were clean, spacious and mostly well-equipped (another set of cutlery/crockery or two per apartment would be useful) and having a fridge and kitchenette was very useful for making breakfasts.

Don’t expect

Quiet evenings and nights! The hotel is on a busy road junction and above a bar which stays open late into the night. (But we slept OK in the comfortable beds).

Friendly and helpful staff, who recommended and booked several restaurants for us. All good recommendations! Apartment big enough for 2 adults and 2 children with full kitchen. Spacious bathroom. We also loved the design og the room(s). Nice and quiet and clean.

Don’t expect

The sink in the bathroom was partly clogged.
