The hotel has an impressive outdoor unheated pool surveying Bangkok’s skyline. It’s partially shaded for protected splashing and is lined by oversized cabanas perfect for lazing around, fresh juice in hand. Smith tip

Action aficionados should beeline to Flow House (Sukhumvit Soi 26, +66 2 108 5210), a wave pool and beach club where the whole family can test their surfing skills before refuelling at the café and bar.

Don't miss…

Hop on the Skytrain to Thong Lor station for a taste of Thailand’s famed street food. Sukhumvit Soi 38 is popular with locals and visitors alike; try family-friendly staples such as freshly cooked pad Thai and coconut rice with fragrant mango.

Set out on foot to explore the area, a laid-back neighbourhood of leafy boulevards, roadside stalls and serene parkland that belie Oriental Residence’s central location. At the end of the street lies Lumpini Park, a large and lush public garden with exotic Central Park airs. It’s a peaceful spot for watching locals practising yoga and t’ai chi, and makes a fantastic outlet for little legs with extra energy. Framed by the city’s skyscrapers, the artificial lake has boats for hire – you’ll feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Style seekers are in for a treat, as you're an easy walk from Bangkok's bustling shopping hub. Siam Paragon & Siam Ocean World features 250 stores, a 16-screen Cineplex, Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium and Kidzania, an incredible indoor theme park that offers edutaining  activities for kids aged 414. Siam Center, Gaysorn Plaza and MBK shopping centres are also nearby.

Stop by the Erawan Shrine at 494 Ratchadamri Road in Lumpini, a Hindu temple housing an imposingly gilded statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of creation god Brahma. Right around the corner is the Grand Palace (Na Phra Lan Rd, Maharaj Pier), the official residence of the kings of Siam and Thailand from 1782 to 1925. Directly adjacent to the palace complex is Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (2 Sanam Chai Road), which boasts a 15m high statue of the religious figure.

Leisurely weekend brunches, pub classics and American diner faves are the calling cards of Hyde and Seek Gastro Bar (+66 (0)2 168 5152), at 65/1 Athenee Residence on Soi Ruamrudee, just off Wireless Road. The playful menu might include baby back ribs with a chilli-chocolate glaze, bangers and mash, or a whole roast chook to share. Neil's Bake Shoppe (+66 (0)2 256 6874) serves towering American-style sweets, including slices of cherry or Oreo cheesecake, fresh-baked cookies and buttery pastries.

There’s no spa on site so book a babysitter and wander over to Bhawa Spa (+66 2 252 7988), an ultra-luxe haven just down the road from the hotel. Their signature treatment delivers four hours of unadulterated bliss.

Getting There

Sitting pretty in the heart of Bangkok's leafy embassy and business district, Oriental Residence is an easy stroll to both Lumpini Park and Sukhumvit Road.

Bangkok’s international and domestic hub is Suvarnabhumi Airport, 30 kilometres from Oriental Residence. Metered taxis will take you into town for about THB400 including airport surcharge and road tolls. The hotel can organise transfers to and from the airport; they start at THB3,500 per car, each way.

Bangkok’s overground BTS Skytrain is a cheap and efficient way of getting around the city. Choose between Ploenchit and Chit Lom stations, both just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Chit Lom is just a stop away from the main interchange Siam, which provides access to the rest of the network.

Bangkok’s erratic traffic can be overwhelming for the uninitiated. If you're brave enough to tackle Bangkok's busy roads, there's valet parking at the hotel.

Bangkok’s express boat taxi service is a cheap, efficient and excellent way of avoiding traffic. Our tip: skip the dedicated tourist boats and hop on the public express boat to see more of the city and its people.

Parent travel tip

For a stress-free arrival, book the hotel’s VIP Fast Track Service. Representatives will escort you from your arrival gate and whoosh you through customs and immigration, as well as collecting your luggage. The service starts from THB2,200 a person, one way.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Oriental Residence – has been selected and approved by parents.

A bustling tropical metropolis may not be the obvious choice for a family holiday, but Bangkok is a city of surprises. Away from tuk-tuk-clogged traffic and dizzying crowds, Oriental Residence hotel sits serenely in an enclave of broad boulevards and quiet embassy lanes. Don’t be fooled by its grown-up good looks: with handy kitchenettes, laundry facilities, an on-site café and plenty of space for large broods to spread out, these elegant apartments make a thoroughly child-friendly stay. On the fourth floor, the inviting pool deck comes complete with a kids’ pool, well-stocked bar and impressive city views. A jam-packed games room, kids’ tour programme and babysitting service mean younger Smiths are well cared, leaving their parents free to sneak off for a couple of hours at the spa or a romantic tête à tête at fine-dining destination Savelberg Thailand. Most pleasingly, this peaceful city pad doesn’t sacrifice on location, either: Bangkok explorers will appreciate the hotel’s proximity to family theme parks, a host of shopping centres and gourmet restaurants, and, a quick whoosh on the Skytrain away, the capital’s most iconic cultural delights.
