Our favourite rooms

On the gingham-flounced, wood-carved spectrum of Alpine decor, rooms at Le Portetta fall somewhere between sleek modern and chalet-cosy, with clean lines, cosily textured fabrics and a palette of soft greys, coffees, caramels and treacle. The hotel’s Loft Suites on the upper floors offer a self-catering set-up and each sleep up to eight, in two or three bedrooms. Lofts 1 and 5 sleep two adults and two children; opt for Loft 6 to sleep four adults and two children in two ensuite doubles and a twin. Family Rooms (where breakfast included as part of the room rate) consist of an oversized master bedroom with seating area and an ensuite, plus a bunk room, which sleeps two, and ensuite shower room. It’s worth paying a little extra for a piste rather than valley view.

Portetta Spa has three treatment rooms, a blue-tiled steam room, hammam and sauna, as well as a chill-out area with wicker beds to unwind on pre- or post-pampering. The spa uses Bamford, Oskia, and OPI products; try a hydrating facial or the muscle-soothing post-sport massage (book treatments before you arrive in resort).

Book ahead

Organise babysitting through the hotel at least 24 hours in advance. Arrange spa treatments a week or more before you arrive in resort.

Food and drink

A blend of hearty Savoyard fare and Italian specialties is on offer at the hotel’s Cucina Angelina restaurant, helmed by respected chef Angela Hartnett. The menu features locally sourced produce, foraged food, and grilled meats from the restaurant’s open range. Sample the fondue, tartiflette and cheese plates to make sure you’re replacing all calories burnt on the slopes. Cucina Angelina matches the casual style of Portetta, with reclaimed wood and stone, rich colours and oversized sofa seating, and wooden tables. At night, the twinkling lights of the valley and low-lighting up the romance levels. Food is also served outdoors, on Courchevel’s biggest terrace, no less.

Family fare

There is a children’s menu at the Portetta Restaurant, serving simple treats such as croques monsieurs. Families are welcome at the eateries, which are equipped with booster seats and highchairs.

Hotel Bar

Cushion-bolstered, supersized sofas in traditional Alpine felts create a cosy feel in the family-friendly lounge, at one end of which is the hotel bar: this lively spot, open all day until late, is Le Portetta’s après-ski hub, with a freestanding fireplace and chimney stack at its heart, and quirky stag heads and wood carvings to remind you you're in the mountains. Well-behaved, accompanied children are welcome. Sometimes the bar plays host to live music gigs, too.

Last orders

Breakfast is served between 7am and 10am; have lunch from 12 noon until 2.30pm and dinner between 7pm and 9pm. A snacks menu is served until 5pm. The bar shuts at 11pm.

Smith Insider

  • Top table

Enjoy breakfast and dinner at family-friendly Le Portetta restaurant; lunch can be indoors or out, at the Brasserie or Fire & Ice, respectively. After a day on the piste, nip to the bar for hot chocolates and vins chauds all round.

  • Room service

Loft Suite kitchenettes come with fridges – hotel rooms do not: either way, staff are happy to heat milk or baby food on request. For Loft Suite guests, enjoy a Michelin-starred feast in your apartment, by arranging for chefs from 1850’s Chabichou restaurant to cook for you.

Things to do

Based in Courchevel 1650, you’re at the heart of the Three Vallleys ski area, so it would be churlish not to take to the slopes. Near the main Ariondaz lift, as well as 1650’s nursery slopes, Le Portetta is in an ideal location for skiers and boarders of all abilities. But when you do want a break, Le Portetta is the perfect retreat, day and night. Unwind piste-knotted muscles in the hammam, steam room or sauna, or book a spa treatment. Your children can let off any residual steam in the kids’ games room. Borrow a film from the hotel’s DVD library and curl up on the sofa.

Hotel activities

The basement games room has a snooker table, table football, Wii consoles, flatscreen TV and board games to borrow. Hosted in the bar, there are live music gigs dotted across the winter calendar – soak up the atmosphere over a post-piste vin chaud.

Smith tip

Use your lift pass to hop on a resort bus to 1550, and take the Grangettes lift up to the top of the 2km-long, floodlit tobogganing course in 1850 – entertainment for children of all ages (9am–7.30pm).

Don't miss…

Dressing up, face painting and songs around the campfire come together on the Indian Trail, organised by Le Loup Gris et Sa Tribu (grey wolf and his tribe) and based in 1650 (

Slopeside in Courchevel, Le Portetta is at the heart of the vast Three Valleys ski area – linked with Meribel, Val Thorens and La Tania – with activities to please snow bunnies of all ages, such as ice skating and tobogganing.

As an alternative to the French-run ESF ski school, New Generation is a smaller, British-run outfit, based in 1650 and nine other French resorts. It gets good reviews and, consequently, booked up, so reserve lessons before you reach resort (+33 (0)4 79 01 03 18).

The indoor Forum ice rink, at Courchevel 1850, was built for the 1992 Olympics and is open for public humiliation (and skating) from 3pm until 7pm, but check the calendar for gala events and closures (boot hire available on site). The forum also houses a bowling alley, climbing wall and indoor agility course (+33 (0)4 79 08 19 50).

Getting There

Portetta lies piste-side in the ski resort of Courchevel 1650, in the central French Alps in the mountainous department of Savoie.

Two hours, or 90km away, Chambéry is the nearest airport to Portetta (, and is well served by low-cost airlines flying from London and regional airports in the UK and the Netherlands during winter. For other international arrivals, the alternative is Geneva, a three-hour drive from Courchevel (

Moutiers is a 30-minute drive from Portetta. The station is served by Eurostar’s ski train from London, meaning you can leave the capital on Friday night and be in resort by mid-morning (

Winter road conditions plus your hotel’s slope-side location mean you’re unlikely to get much use out of bringing your own wheels. For those who prefer to drive, on-site parking spaces at the hotel cost €20 a day.

Courchevel has a heliport and private landing strip at around 2,000 metres: landing fees apply and you’ll need to organise onward transfers to the hotel (

Parent travel tip

Although only appropriate for Saturday-to-Saturday stays from the UK, reaching the resort by rail is one of the most pain-free ways to travel with children (who’ll hopefully sleep most of the way on night services). Note that only under-12s qualify for children’s fares (

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Portetta – has been selected and approved by parents.

The view from your window makes for a serene scene: snow-covered mountains, gorgeously groomed pistes and the lights of Courchevel 1650 are all around you.

Your state of calm, however, is not just triggered by scenery. Perhaps it’s your ski-in, ski-out accommodation that’s helping, making the daily transition between hotel and piste seamless… Or perhaps you’re soothed by Le Portetta’s pedigree, as part of the same hotel family as UK forest outposts the Pig and Lime Wood.

It’s also reassuring to see how happy your children are – content to be in a ski resort, but also enjoying the hotel’s family-friendly welcome, well-stocked kids’ games room and child-friendly food (alfresco pizzas at chic hotel bar-cum-restaurant Fire & Ice are a particular hit). The hotel’s Darphin Spa is certainly a tonic.

The spacious, stylish apartment-like Loft Suites are undoubtedly relaxing: they feature mutedly modern Alpine interios with separate bedrooms for you and the children; there’s a generous living area for precious downtime as a family, and the well-equipped kitchenette means you don’t have to dine out (although you may find that family demand for the modern French fare at Le Portetta Restaurant means you do…). Hotel Family Rooms, although not self-catering, are pleasingly practical, offering an adjoining bunk room for two, so that your little ones can sleep close by.

Not that all of Le Portetta’s charms are indoors. Being at the heart of the Three Valleys ski area, with a choice of excellent ski schools on the doorstep, secures the hotel’s spot as an idyllic Savoie retreat.
