Our favourite rooms

When you’re travelling en masse, stay in interconnecting family rooms that give you two bedrooms and two ensuites in total, so everyone’s got plenty of space. The Junior Suite and Garden Suite Deluxe each have a bedroom and a separate lounge, giving families three potential sleeping rooms when the Suites are interconnected.

Lay out your beach towel beside one of the hotel’s three pools. The family-friendly Beach Club Pool – down on the sands beside the Mediterranean – is heated and watched over by a lifeguard from 8am to 8pm in summer; the resort’s main pool and central pool are tucked away among the gardens, and swimming lessons are available.

Andalusian in design, Puente Romano's sleek Six Senses Spa (awarded Spain's Best Resort Spa 2016 by World Spa Awards) has a wet area with a hydrotherapy pool, cold plunge pool, heat and ice experience showers, herbal steam room, sauna and hammam. There are nine treatment rooms: six indoors and three outdoors, with canopied roofs and swing cabanas overlooking the sea, and a range of Six Senses signature massages, facials, hammam experiences, body treatments and scrubs, and mani-pedis. The spa uses QMS Medicosmetics and Organic Pharmacy products. For a truly indulgent spa day, opt for the beauty, royal, or energiser rituals, which combine several specially selected treatments. Only over-14s are allowed in the spa.

Don’t forget your tennis shoes: Puente Romano has its own clay courts. The spectacular seaside tennis club was originally managed by Bjorn Borg!

You won’t go hungry: there are nine restaurants and children are welcome in all of them. In Dani Garcia Restaurante, the eponymous Michelin-star-holding chef dishes up Iberian delights and tempting tapas. Open in high season, Del Mar is right on the beach and specialises in fresh fish and seafood. There’s also the Sea Grill, with its own tandoori oven and right by the pool (ideal for lounging with a drink while watching older kids splash about); Serafina, overlooking the gardens and ancient Roman bridge; Thai Gallery, the hotel’s moodily lit Asian restaurant with fragrant curries and tasty light bites; Uni, serving up spectacular sushi; Bibo's top-notch tapas and raw oyster bar; and Rachel's, perfect for healthy breakfasts and light meals. Celicioso is gluten free, and claims to be Marbella’s first such restaurant.

Family fare

Sea Grill is the best bet with kids in tow. Pull up a highchair and let the little Smiths tuck into burgers, spaghetti or paellas.

Hotel Bar

For a grown-up nightclub atmosphere, book a babysitter and head to La Suite after midnight to hear international DJs in action. If you're more of a golden oldie, Joe's Bar by the Plaza plays hits of the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties.

Things to do

Sun-soaked fun is order of the day in this part of the world, and Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa Marbella has plenty of outdoor activities to offer: swim (or just lounge) at one of several swimming pools, play in the kids club, explore the gardens or head to the beach for some watersports… Parents can abscond to the swish Six Senses spa if they need a little 'me time'.

Sunny days

Tennis coaches are standing by to help players of all abilities improve their game on the hotel’s own courts. Or, head to the beach: a pontoon splits the seashore into a family side and a more tranquil adults-only zone. The extensive grounds are well worth exploring: the 55,000sq m sub-tropical garden is home to more than 400 species of plants from all over the world – many brought to Marbella in a suitcase by the hotel’s founder, HRH Principe Alfonso de Hohenlohe-Langenburg.

Rainy days

The rain in Spain doesn’t often fall on Marbella, but if you encounter an overcast day you can borrow DVDs from the hotel’s library or hide out in the kids club for craft activities.

And there's more…

The hotel gets its name from the real Roman bridge over the river running through the grounds to the sea: it’s a top spot for swan spying.

Smith tip

The flower-filled Parc de la Constitución, in the heart of Marbella on Avenida de España, has a playground with slides, climbing frames and swings, and there’s plenty of room for bike riding. There’s also a small café.

Don't miss…

The Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo de Marbella art gallery, in José Palomo Square, has a good selection of work by local artists and is open from 7pm–10pm (+34 952 825 035).

Marbella deserves its long-held reputation as a full-service family holiday hotspot: there’s certainly no lack of fun to be had under the Andalusian sun. If you're bored of the beach, take the Teleférico Benalmádena cable car ( to the top of Monte Calamorro, 800m above sea level, for some incredible views: bring your own picnic or buy snacks at the summit. Under-10s get discounted tickets; under-13s must be accompanied by an adult.

A traditional theme park about half an hour’s drive from Marbella on Avenida de Tívoli in Málaga, Tivoli World ( has rides and performances suitable for kids of any age. Younger children can ride the trenecito (‘little train’) while older daredevils make for the Free Fall Tower.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa Marbella – has been selected and approved by parents.

We know, we know… we say ‘massive beach hotel in Marbella’ and you think ‘no way, José’. But, at Puente Romano Beach Resort Marbella you can leave your preconceptions at the classically Andalusian-style door. Arriving at Puente Romano — named for the ancient Roman bridge in its gardens — is like moving into a particularly luxurious traditional Andalusian village (the buildings have the classic sun-reflecting whitewashed walls, but there’s an iPod dock in every room).

The multilingual kids club staff offer a warm welcome (and plenty of toys and activities) to young guests, but this is also a typically Mediterranean spot, where multigenerational holidaying is order of the day. Puente Romano has been a hangout for jet-setting families for decades, and in any of the six restaurants you’re liable to find parents, grandparents and kids of all ages mingling happily. Serve under the sun on Puente Romano’s tennis courts, order some spa pampering in the privacy of your room, or take your beach towel from beside the pool to beside the sea – the golden sandy beach is right on the hotel’s doorstep.

Smith & Family

Memories of our stay at Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa Marbella will be called upon to get us Britain’s tough wintery months… We felt spoiled rotten by the attentive staff in a truly stunning setting, and lucky to have the Mediterranean Sea just a few golden sandy steps away. Something really special? Having our little Miss Smith become a real water-baby thanks to the three fantastic pools with bath-warm water. And having the walk through the lush grounds feel like a nature trail for her. We followed our imaginations along the meandering stream (rapids) through the lush plants (jungle), counting the frogs (crocodiles) along the way. It was enough to have had Lewis Carroll inspired. Despite the unmistakable feeling that you're in a five-star resort, there's no stuffiness or formality and the layout, the decor and the friendly people all guarantee relaxation – and that, surely, is the whole reason you go on holiday?
