Our favourite rooms

With the exception of the Junior Suite, all rooms in the 36-room Pineapple House can accommodate two adults and one or two children. Best for parents with babies or small families, these breezy, ocean-facing rooms are styled by Ralph Lauren and each have one or two four-poster beds (connecting rooms are also available). For more privacy and space, splash out on a Classic Villa (two to four bedrooms, some with small private swimming pools) with a private lawn for outdoor play, set just steps from the beach. And, with a dedicated villa staff, you’ll have an extra pair of hands to serve breakfast or help pack your brood up for the beach.

A smooth stone deck, dotted with blue-cushioned sun-loungers and bright white umbrellas, surrounds the unheated double-vanishing edge infinity pool. Toddlers will love splashing and wading in the shallow end; more advanced swimmers can paddle off to the deep end, which cascades into a spacious spa pool on the ocean’s edge. Lifeguards are on duty from 9am to 5pm and pool toys are available to borrow. There's also a tranquil adults-only pool at the spa.

Tucked away in an 18th-century guest cottage on the ocean’s edge is the tranquil and tropical spa, open from 9am to 6pm. There is a full menu of invigorating and revitalising treatments – Jamaican coffee bean body scrub or exotic pineapple body buff, anyone? And be sure to take a plunge in the adults-only pool at the spa. If you fancy a day of pampering with your teen, a specially designed menu with massages, facials, manicures and pedicures for ages16+ is also on offer.

Use of kids’ club and all non-motorised watersports are free for guests.

Book ahead

Schedule appoints one week prior to arrival for the seven-treatment room spa, tennis courts, deep sea fishing trips, yacht charter, private sailing tours and sunset cruises.

Round Hill has been recognised for its efforts to conserve natural resources through the use of eco-friendly energy and water practices and recycling initiatives. It also maintains an organic chef’s garden, where staff grow most of the produce used in the restaurant.

Food and drink

Round Hill Hotel & Villas – Jamaica – Jamaica

James Beard-awarded chef, Martin Maginley, is behind the contemporary Jamaican-inspired cuisine served at the Grill. Kids will be kept entertained as they watch cooks wrangle orders in the wood-fired grill in the open kitchen. Locally sourced ingredients – much of the produce comes from the organic kitchen garden – are the focus of the dishes on the daily-changing menu. The elegant, whitewashed room is adorned with local art and crisp black and white photos, but all eyes will be on the sparkling ocean just beyond the terrace. Weekly themed nights such as a barefoot barbecue on the beach, farm-to-table dinner and Jamaican night on the terrace with live music offer a change of venue and keep dinnertime interesting for even the most fidgety diners. Other laid-back (but no less delicious) dining options are the Pool Bar and Beach Bar, both open for snacks, lunch and early dinner every day.

Family fare

Highchairs and booster seats are available at each restaurant. Tasty children's fare not only makes an appearance on every menu, but entices picky eaters further with titles such as the Lion King burger, Scooby Doo grilled cheese sandwich, Power Puff pasta, Pokémon’s catch breaded fish fingers and Superman’s hot dog. The chef will accommodate special dietary requests and the kitchen will heat bottles and blend food for the fledgling eaters.

Hotel Bar

Laid-back and very family-friendly, the Pool Bar (10am to 5pm) and Beach Bar (10am to 6pm) serve snacks and a cocktail menu of daiquiris, punches and rum drinks. Open from 5pm to 10pm, the Ralph Lauren Cocktail Bar mixes tropical cocktails and has a robust 500-bin wine list. Early dinner with a children’s menu is available, but after 7.30pm, the bar is adults only.

Last orders

The Grill serves breakfast from 7.30am to 10.30am and re-opens for dinner from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The pool and beach bars are open for lunch and snacks from 10am to 6pm. The Ralph Lauren Cocktail Bar serves snacks and drinks from 5pm to 10pm.

Kids Club

We’re not sure who is more excited about this, but Round Hill has creative, fun and complimentary kids’ clubs for two age groups. The Pineapple Club will keep ages 3–6 entertained with arts and crafts, games of hide and seek in the gorgeous grounds and story time. Junior Smiths aged 7-12 can take part in the 7-Up Club, where they might learn traditional basket weaving, tour the organic garden, take a reggae lesson or be part of a talent show. Both clubs are situated in a historic house near the lobby and are open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Qualified babysitters are available for $10 an hour per child (minimum three hours); book at least 12 hours in advance. After 10pm, you’ll be asked to pay for taxi costs to get your sitter home safely.

Things to do

Situated on 100 acres of meticulously manicured grounds, featuring a show-stopper of a swimming pool and a private sandy beach with kayaks and pedal boats at the ready for ocean exploration, all will find plenty to do as a family at the resort. Of course, independent playtime is important, too. Kids will keep busy all day, with a whole schedule of activities at the free kids’ club. And parents can take advantage of their downtime with a yoga class, signature spa treatment or game of tennis on one of the resort’s five courts.

Hotel activities

Soaking up the great, watery outdoors is what this place is all about. There’s the vast array of watersports, including tubing, water-skiing, windsurfing, kayaks and Hobie cats. Everything you need to go snorkelling is provided; you can take a boat out sport fishing, sailing or on a sunset cruise, and tennis and golf are readily accessible.

Sunny days

With a soft, golden sand beach right on mellow Montego Bay and an enticing infinity pool, spending time in or around water is the main attraction. Swim in the graduated pool or ocean (safe and sandy for swimmers of all ages), snorkel, kayak, windsurf or set out in a glass bottom boat right from the resort’s shore. You can also easily arrange guided sport fishing, sailing, speedboat and scuba diving excursions. Those on land can build massive sand castles, play tennis, take meditative strolls around the gorgeous grounds or just lie on a sunlounger, order another round of rum punch and gaze out towards the impossibly blue horizon.

Rainy days

A little tropical shower won’t spoil the fun – just moves things indoors to the kids club, which has a games room and TV and reading lounge. Challenge your family to a game of foosball or pool, a karaoke sing-off, board-game marathon or any number of video game consoles. Adults and teens aged 16+ can get in a workout at the fitness centre followed by a spa session.

And there's more…

Parents and teen-Smiths can tee up at nearby Tryall Golf Club – one of five championship golf courses in the area. The resort will make your reservation and shuttle you to and from the club.

Local Guide

Round Hill Hotel & Villas – Jamaica – Jamaica

Though long days on the sunloungers while the little ones play in the kids' club can be tempting (especially when there’s a full cocktail service on offer on the beach), there’s plenty on offer for activity-hungry families near Round Hill. Jamaica has an abundance of family-friendly adventures for every interest. Chukka (+1 877 424 8552), a local tour operator, got started with signature horseback riding tours over land and through the Caribbean Sea, and has since expanded to include such adventures as rainforest canopy ziplining, ATV trips and river tubing excursions (+1 877 424 8552). An hour from Montego Bay, the Mayfield Falls River Walk follows a pristine river as it winds through a swathe of idyllic jungle. Spend the day hiking, swimming, cliff jumping, visiting a Rasta village and revelling in Jamaica’s natural beauty. Round Hill’s concierge can help you organise a guided trip that includes lunch. Located in Ocho Rios, the 100-acre Rainforest Adventures at Mystic Mountain (+1 876 974 3990) adventure park offers every kind of outdoor activity a family could want – and a few you can’t even imagine. In addition to a waterslide, canopy zipline and the SkyExplorer chairlift 700 feet above the rain forest, the park offers visitors the chance to take a bobsled ride through the jungle, inspired by Jamaica's Cool Runnings bobsled team. Reputedly still haunted by the ghost of its original owner, 1770s plantation house Rose Hall Great House (+1 888 767 3425) has been restored to its original grandeur and is open for tours both day and (eerie) night. A second restored plantation house, Cinnamon Hill Great House, formerly owned by Johnny Cash, is also located on the grounds and open for tours. Ghost stories not your thing? The gardens are host 54 holes of championship golfing pleasure that sprawls down to the sea.

After a day of exploring the area, pull off North Coast Highway at Falmouth Road in Montego Bay to try jerk chicken from Scotchie’s (+1 876 953 8041). The no-frills open-air café specialises in chicken, but it also prepares excellent seafood, pork and sausages, all cooked on a fire pit. Or,  find room at a picnic table to try jerk-seasoned specialties from the Pork Pit on Gloucester Avenue (+1 876 940 3008). The giant cooktop sizzles with spicy, ginger-rubbed meats, including chicken and fish – best with fresh mango juice. Book a sitter for a romantic dinner on the water at the Houseboat Grill (+1 876 979 8845), a boat docked in Montego Bay’s Marine Park Fish Sanctuary that serves grilled lobster, spicy smoked marlin and other aquatic dishes straight from the sea. The menu changes daily.

Getting There

Just west of Montego Bay – Jamaica’s second-largest city and a bustling tourist hub – Round Hill sits apart from the crowds on a secluded and tropical 110-acre peninsula on a stretch of Caribbean Ocean coastline.

Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (, is the nearest option, a 30-minute drive from Round Hill. Airlines including Caribbean Airlines, United and Virgin Atlantic operate regular flights to Miami, New York, Montreal and other major cities in North America. Though it is a four-hour transfer from the hotel, Kingston's Norman Manley Airport is another option, receiving flights from London (with BA), Toronto (via Air Canada) and other international hubs.

If you fancy exploring beyond the resort, it’s a good idea to hire a car, and main coastal routes and roads are well maintained. There are rental desks available at the airport, and the hotel has free parking onsite.

Parent travel tip

Bypass lengthy immigration and security lines by purchasing passes through the hotel for Club Mobay, a fast-track airport service that will whisk you and your family through winding airport queues.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including Round Hill Hotel & Villas – has been selected and approved by parents.

Think Jamaica is all reggae and mega-resorts mobbed with rum-swilling revellers? Then prepare to be pleasantly surprised by the timeless slice of family-friendly island paradise that is the Round Hill Hotel & Villas. Perched directly on glittering Montego Bay, this former sugar and coconut plantation opened in 1953 as a complex of luxury cottages, hosting John and Jackie Kennedy, Bob Hope and Paul Newman to name-drop a few.

Today, it retains its classic charm and entices families with a free activity-packed kids’ club, loads of watersports, a pristine private beach and a kitchen helmed by a James Beard-awarded chef (take that, picky eaters). And, when kids are busy weaving traditional baskets or taking a guided nature walk around the tropical grounds, parents can relax with signature treatments at the spa (or just soak in the adults-only spa pool), stretch out in a beachfront yoga class or work up a healthy glow on one of the five tennis courts. And don’t worry, with themed family nights with Jamaican-style beach barbecue and live music, you’ll still get an authentic dose of reggae, too, mon.
