Our favourite rooms

Spacious suites in muted maritime shades with sleek modern furniture not only boast sea views but also have enough room for up to two little Smiths in cots or on Z-beds. Their fully equipped kitchens and generous living area with a table and chairs make dining in not just a possibility but a pleasure. Choose from ground-floor suites with patios or first-floor for a private balcony and a kitchen. The sumptuous two-floor suite varies by having a balcony and patio and a six foot Hypnos bed in the master bedroom. Note that no interconnecting rooms are available, making suites your best option. King rooms have floorspace for one additional Z-bed or cot; Cosy doubles do not. The Family Junior Garden suites offer full-sized single bunk beds for children.

Poolside

The indoor mosaic-tiled pool is open to families 9am–6pm, followed by two hours of adults-only swimming. St Moritz’s outdoor pool is open in good weather and is surrounded by hammocks and sunloungers. Both pools have a child-friendly shallow end, and a lifeguard from April to September; armbands and inflatables are available to buy at the leisure club. You can buy swim nappies from reception.

Spa

The Cowshed Spa comprises six treatment rooms, a relaxation area, and manicure and pedicure stations. Whether you elect to have a two-hour signature Sun & Sea body treatment or a 30-minute facial, all treatments use the spa’s namesake botanical products, hand blended at Babington House, the home of Cowshed. Expecting another little Smith? The maternity treatment menu caters fabulously for mums-to-be – just don’t expect, after all that relaxation, to make much sense for the rest of the day…

And…

The hotel offers a Landrover chauffeur service from 8am to 6pm every day, to take you to nearby Polzeath and Rock.

Book ahead

The nine-room Cowshed spa and the restaurant are both popular, so it's worth booking before you arrive. Organise kids’ club places when you make your reservation; allow 24 hours’ notice for babysitting.

Dining

On the first floor of the 'reception building', St Moritz's restaurant serves an evenings-only menu of steaks, lots of great seafood and local, seasonal flavours; it changes regularly according to what's good and fresh. The hotel's other restaurant, Seaside, is a standalone daytime restaurant beside the outdoor pool. It's open for lunch all year round, and for breakfast and dinner too during peak times; the menu consists of salads and a handful of informal mains, all served up with fabulous sea views.

Family fare

St Moritz serves a children’s menu in the main restaurant that goes the extra mile, offering not only kid-friendly mains and desserts – we love the sound of chocolate nemesis – but also starters such as houmous and pitta or melon boat, and a choice of children’s mocktails. Child-friendly dishes at Sea Side include meatballs with pasta and chicken Caesar salad. The hotel can also offer a packed lunch, for little Smiths who don't want to take time off exploring the grounds, or takeaways for lazy evenings.

Hotel Bar

Lounge by day, bar by night – this is a big, comfortable space next to the restaurant where children are always welcome and jazzy music tinkles. There are magazines scattered around, and you can order beer and local cider, as well as wine and cocktails.

Last orders

The bar serves drinks until late; get your food order in by 9.30pm. The children's menu is served from 6pm – 7pm in the restaurant, and all day at Seaside (when it's open). Cornish cream teas are served in the bar between 12 noon and 5pm.

Smith Insider

  • Top table

Sea Side is perfect for easy-breezy family lunches. Request a spot near the open kitchen in the main restaurant and let the spectacle of chefs at work inspire budding cooks while you dine.

  • Room service

Not as such, the Seaside restaurant offers takeaways and breakfast can be ordered to you room.

    Also

As an alternative to the children’s menu, you can order half-size portions for mini Smiths from the à la carte menu for half the price.

Kids Club

Two children’s programmes run during school holidays, including half terms. There’s a free Mini Moritz kids’ club, daily from 3pm: children aged 6–14 are invited to join in treasure hunts, arts and crafts, games of rounders, and more. Younger kids are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Also for children aged 6–14, there is a daily Wavehunters Surf Academy (9.45am–12 noon; £25 a day). This local surf outfit tailors activities to St Moritz junior guests, either taking them surfing, rockpooling or to play on the beach. Surf equipment is supplied; all you need to provide is swim kit and towels – oh, and children who can swim…

Babysitting

St Moritz can arrange babysitting from a pool of CRB-checked locals, from £8 an hour (minimum three hours; allow 24 hours’ notice); alternatively, agency staff are available, incurring an additional booking fee.

Baby-listening

There’s no kit provided, but bring your own audio monitors, for keeping an ear out for your little ones from the patio or balcony in your suite. Just don’t expect it to work from the St Moritz restaurant, which is in a different building – for dining à deux, you’ll need a babysitter.

Things to do

Little Smiths will find the school-holiday clubs bring a sociable side to staying at St Moritz. While they’re off at surf school or enjoying an afternoon activity, indulge in a treatment at the Cowshed spa or make the most of the facilities, including a gym, hammam steam room and Jacuzzi. There are swimming pools, indoors and out, with a raft of games and tech to keep children entertained in all weathers. There are plenty of nearby beaches, too.

Sunny days

Within the grounds, finesse your forehand on the tennis court, or brave the heated outdoor pool. There’s a lawn where children can play, and a second turfed area with goal posts for budding footballers. For younger children, balance bikes (and helmets) are available to borrow. There’s a choice of beaches on the doorstep: below St Moritz is the Greenaway, which mixes coarse sands with purple and green slates and plenty of rockpools; for lazing/picnicking/reading, head to Daymer Bay, which is the most sheltered option for swimming, too; Polzeath is a broad sweep of barley-coloured sand – the spot for sunset strolls or catching a wave when the surf’s up. Hotel staff will happily arrange surf lessons with Wavehunters Surf Academy.

Rainy days

The mosaic-tiled pool is not the only indoor entertainment at the Leisure Club: there’s also a hammam steam room, Jacuzzi and a state-of-the-art gym. For younger guests, there’s the Mini Moritz room: a kids-only haven, stocked with games, consoles and DVDs.

Smith tip

Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge sits handily at the start of the Camel Trail, a disused railway line that’s two-wheeler friendly. Child seats and buggy trailers are also available to hire (www.bridgebikehire.co.uk).

Don't miss…

…two Michelin-starred chef Nathan Outlaw at his finest: book the tasting menu for two at his upscale eatery in Rock (and a babysitter). Fish-focused dishes are flawlessly presented and wine-matched (+44 (0)1208 862737).

Cornwall’s family appeal can be found in glorious microcosm around the St Moritz hotel. Beaches and surfing aside, there are family-friendly attractions by the bucket-and-spade-load, plus the simple fresh-air pleasures of walking the South West Coastal Path and cycling the Camel Trail.

For sea kayaking, rock climbing or a spot of coasteering (navigating the coastline using climbing, abseiling and cliff diving with a bit of swimming thrown in), outdoor adventure company Cornish Rock Tors (+44 (0)7791 534884) is a local specialist. They also offer powerboat tours. Pint-sized adventurers will need to be accompanied by an adult and aged 5 for kayaking, 7 for climbing or 10 for coasteering. Children aged 7-plus can try coasteering – a form of extreme rockpooling. Billed as ‘where farming meets fun’, Carruan (+44 (0)1208 869584) is a working farm with plenty of family-friendly additions: tractor tours, a soft-play barn, a cuddle corner, where children can get up close with some of the residents, plus the chance to visit the pigs, cattle and sheep raised here. The café, too, is a tot’s dream with light lunches, cakes, milkshakes and ice cream.

Smith & Family  Parent Panel reviews

Every property featured in the Smith & Family collection – including St Moritz Hotel – has been selected and approved by parents.

The modernist St Moritz Hotel in Trebetherick may look like a 1930s cruise ship from the outside, but beyond the front doors, it’s all hands on deck to ensure a stylish stay that makes light of travelling with little ones. Sea-view suites – fitted with generous living areas and a fully equipped kitchen – are decorated in soft seaside shades, with a choice of balcony or patio terrace. And the grown-up appeal extends well beyond your bedroom. Head to the brasserie-style restaurant to sample seasonal ingredients in tasty combinations. Or dine out at one of the area’s many superlative eateries – with upmarket Rock and Padstow a couple of coves down, you won’t be stuck for choice.

The Cowshed spa is a boon for pampering-deprived parents. And, to add to the relaxation, a great deal of thought has gone into keeping your children happy. Not only is there a well-stocked playroom at the St Moritz, there’s also a school-holidays kids’ club and the option to join junior surf academy each morning. It’s rare for us to endorse a hotel as truly catering to children of all ages, but the St Moritz hotel more than qualifies.

We loved

The pool are and the seaside café, the staff and the costal walks nearby. The walks in both directions from the hotel were lovely. In Rock, we had booked a table and the mariners rock which was fabulous. We also went to the Basement in Padstow and enjoyed a lovely meal. In the hotel both the restaurant and the seaside café are good but the value at the café means that wins but a good margin.

Don’t expect

Don't expect much from your his and her travel sets. A small tube of hand cream and a lip balm seems pathetic to me. The gym was very basic too and the air con in the gym didn't work. Also housekeeping forgot us one day and did us very late another day which meant that chilling out in our room in the afternoon was not really an option.

Stunning setting, the hotel is beautifully decorated, the food is FANTASTIC, great food and seating area at the outside pool and the spa is a must. I think our favourite part was having dinner and cocktails in the bar. The free shuttle service to Rock is also such a bonus too.
