In your room

Satellite TV, CD/DVD player, free Indigo Pearl CD, minibar, wine cellar, beach bag, own-label toiletries. Private Pool Villas also have a pool, double spa room with sauna and steam bath, Jacuzzi tub, coffee machine, fully stocked bar, pantry, pillow menu, personal 24-hour butler service, Blu-ray player and mobile phone. The Coqoon Spa Suite has a pool, sauna and steam room.

Our favourite rooms

The D-Buk suite is our pick; the over-sized daybed and extended multimedia centre make for the perfect family room. A separate living area and two small private courtyards mean you can keep an eye on the kids from the comfort of the couch. For something more luxurious, try the Two-Bedroom Private Pool Villas. Living and sleeping areas are split between three pavilions, putting some space between younger guests and older ones. The private pool will keep the kids entertained, while Mr and Mrs Smith relax on a sun lounger with a butler-delivered cocktail, or try out the in-villa treatment room, complete with sauna. The walled garden ensures privacy and peace of mind.

The Slate has three different pools, but two are adults-only. The stunning family pool has a non-smoking, children-only section, so it’s ideal for all ages. It’s supervised by a lifeguard from 8am to 7pm and has a shallow end with Roman steps for hesitant water babies.

Coqoon Spa, open from 9am until 10pm, features eight luxurious rooms nestled in luscious rainforest and tropical gardens. The highlight is the Nest, a suspended spa suite tucked into the branches of a centuries-old banyan tree. Massages, scrubs and wraps form just one part of the wide-ranging treatment menu that also includes holistic services encompassing diet, exercise, activity, rest and relaxation. Little Smiths are very welcome, and can be coddled with a relaxing massage or a coconut scrub; therapists will happily polish little nails and trim or braid bairns' barnets.

The day-beds in Private Pool Villa bedrooms convert to beds for infants and are designed to sleep kids up to age 12; those in the two-bed Villa come with arm-rests that double as safety rails. The two-bedroom Villa suits independent kids best as the bedrooms are in separate pavilions, however all villas interconnect. The pool of the two-bed Villa comes with a special paddling section that will be a hit with toddling smalls.

Book ahead

Babysitters and nannies should be booked at least one day in advance.

The Green Pearl committee encourages eco-friendly practices within the hotel and organises beach clean-ups and awareness workshops in the community. Indigo Pearl also backs Phuket Sunshine Village, a foundation supporting tsunami orphans.

Food and drink

Indigo Pearl Hotel – Phuket – Thailand

All-day dining, including a generous buffet breakfast, is available at giant Tin Mine, a black-and-white space with a global menu, Thai street-food cooking stations and specialty cuisine evenings twice a week. The Rivet Grill will satisfy fish-lovers; inside the dining room, vintage horse-drawn carriages (minus the horses) have been transformed into comfy booths, where diners sample sizzling grilled and fusion treats (fish and seafood take starring roles). To up the romance, Mr & Mrs can visit Black Ginger, the hotel’s signature fine-dining restaurant. Two traditional peaked-roof wooden salas and an azure-underlit bar set a seductive scene for gourmet Thai grazing. Children are allowed (they'll love hopping in the boat that takes you to the pond-set restaurant), but we’d be hiring a babysitter for this one.

Family fare

Over-7s only are allowed at Rivet, but Tin Mine and Black Ginger both have children’s menus; chefs are happy to adapt the menu for little ones or heat up milk or baby food. Highchairs are also available. The Underground Café by the pool has light mains and gourmet sandwiches if you’re in need of child-friendly snacks during the day. There’s a minibar in each room for storing milk, snacks and small jars of baby food.

Hotel Bar

Above Rivet is Rebar, where kids are welcome, DJs spin relaxed tunes and there’s a menu of tasty snacks such as tapas-style seafood and Black Angus tenderloin, served alongside New World wines and sultry cocktails (fresh fruit juices or mocktails for the nippers). Whiskey aficionados can try tipples from around the world at Tongkah Tin Syndicate, which also has pool tables and TVs showing the latest sporting matches.

Last orders

Dine at Tin Mine, Rivet Grill and Black Ginger (bookings required) until 10pm. Drink in Rebar and Tongkah Tin Syndicate until the clock chimes midnight.

Things to do

Is one holiday here enough to get through all the facilities on offer? Thanks to the free kids club, tennis courts, pampering spa, three restaurantsfamily-friendly pool, brilliant dive centre and easy access to the beach – just a two-minute walk away – we reckon you may need to book a return trip (or just refuse to leave).

Sunny days

Make the most of Phuket's tropical climate by borrowing bikes and wheeling around the resort, or head straight to the beach. Challenge the family to a tennis tournament, then cool off by one of the three pools. Keen divers can board the on-site PADI centre’s catamaran bound for the Similan Islands, one of the world’s top dive sites.

Rainy days

Enrol the kids in the ‘Little Chef at Moo’s Kitchen’ class, where they’ll try their hand at decorating cakes, filling macaroons and baking cookies (might as well start them young, eh?). While they’re busy getting their fingers sticky, book yourselves a ‘Mr and Mrs’ treatment at Coqoon Spa, which involves a foot bath, a signature bath for two, a 60-minute oil massage and an Anne Sémonin facial of your choice.

Smith tip

Kids and adults alike can learn about the island’s history at Phuket Mining Museum in Kathu. Staff at The Slate can also arrange historical art tours and treks between temples.

Don't miss…

A visit to Phuket’s colourful markets will introduce the little ones to the ancient Thai tradition of bargaining (could come in useful back home).

The Slate is a great place for a family holiday, with plenty to keep everyone entertained. The hotel can organise activities such as elephant treks and sea cruises that will enthrall adults and kids alike. Phuket’s markets showcase the best of Thai culture, and dazzle curious eyes with their myriad of colours and objects.

Phuket is a great spot for adventurers; the hotel can tailor-make trips for the entire family based on surf or turf, including sea kayaking and rafting, eco tours, island-hopping, sea cruises, elephant trekking, ATV tours, bicycle rides, big-game fishing and even private windsurfing lessons.

Getting There

The Slate fringes Nai Yang Beach on Phuket's north-west coast, near the international airport and forests of Sirinat National Park.

There are regular flights to Phuket International Airport ( from Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Japan and Australia. Indigo Pearl is a 10-minute drive west of the airport. A VIP fasttrack service is proffered for all Private Pool Villa guests, with personal attendants assisting you to clear immigration, collect luggage and access lounges (THB1,290 a person for your arrival or THB1,990 with departure, too). Normal airport transfers cost THB350 a person, but book with Smith and you'll receive them for free.

Although trains on the Thai mainland can be an efficient way to travel, Phuket island isn't served by train, so we recommend hopping there by air.

It's a 30-minute drive from Phuket town to the hotel. If you're arriving with your own wheels, free on-site parking is available.
