It’s hard to believe that Soho was once a no-go spot – once bathed in the neon glow of sex-shop signs, and pockmarked with brothels, Soho’s ebb and flow is of a mildly less lascivious nature now, although traces of its raunchy past have slipped into its seams. This is a major hub for gay clubs and bars (G-A-Y and Admiral Duncan are among the most notable), but the areas winding streets also attract foodies looking for low-cost cuisine from all over the world. Some of London’s most-lauded theatres add a touch of respectability to its fringe cachet (the Palladium, Lyric, Gielgud, Prince Edward), Carnaby Street harks back to modish mods, and on rare sunny days Soho and Golden Squares offer city dwellers some leafy respite.

Come rain, more rain, or shine, Soho rarely sleeps.

Getting there

  • Planes

    London Heathrow is around a 40-minute drive away.

  • Trains

    Several Tube stations are within easy reach – Oxford Circus (on the Central, Bakerloo and Victoria lines) and Tottenham Court Road (on the Central and Northern lines) are your best bets. The overland stations at Charing Cross, Euston, King’s Cross and St Pancras (for the Eurostar) are around a 10-minute taxi journey away.

  • Automobiles

    The super-central setting makes motors unnecessary, but if you do bring one, you can park it on Brewer Street.
